Since 1989, Hartford Children’s Theatre (HCT) has been dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young people and their families through the theatrical arts, reaching thousands of people within the Greater Hartford region. HCT’s intent is not to make every child a star, but to help them to become the best person they can be through the disciplines of theatre.
We focus on developing literary skills (reading, writing, memorization and articulation) as well as social skills such as teamwork, commitment, compassion and community outreach. Through the generosity of the Immanuel Congregational Church, HCT has found its permanent home on the Farmington Avenue campus! With the construction of the Carriage House Theatre we now have a professional space for the kids to perform. This theatre not only accommodates our drama school students, it also provides a venue for the community to enjoy as they come to see our talented young artists and family-friendly programs.
Hartford Children’s Theatre is committed to the continued development of the City of Hartford and the successful revitalization of our own neighborhood of Asylum Hill. This was understood as we moved into the 1899 Victorian home, and again proven through our renovation of the Carriage House. HCT is nestled in an area brimming with history!
Our landlord, Immanuel Congregational Church, also cherishes its architectural gem built in 1900. Our neighbor, Organized Parents Make A Difference (“OPMAD”), runs after school programs in Hartford schools and is located in a beautiful turn-of-the-century brick building. We are conveniently located across the street from the historic Mark Twain House and the Harriett Beecher Stowe Center.
For many children, our quality, values-based programs and productions serve as an introduction to the arts. HCT considers it a privilege to bring quality live theatre to this brand new audience. We are proud to lay a strong foundation for future artists and educated, energized audiences. We hope you’ll appreciate, after meeting our staff and experiencing our programs, how much we care about our community and our art!
